Root Canal Therapy: Effective Treatment for Advanced Tooth Decay

Illustration of root canal therapy. When tooth decay advances beyond the outer layers of a tooth, the inner tissue becomes infected. Root canal therapy performed at our Lakewood, CO, dental practice is a virtually painless method of removing the infected tissue to salvage the healthy outer structure. The treated tooth is immediately restored with a custom dental crown created with our advanced CEREC® technology. If you are experiencing a toothache or other symptoms of tooth infection, schedule a consultation at our office today. Dr. Brian. J. Polidori will assess your teeth and gums to determine the best solution for your needs.

Root Canal Therapy Candidates

If you have an infected tooth with substantial healthy outer tissue, you may be a candidate for root canal therapy. Signs of tooth infection can include:

  • Persistent dental pain
  • Sudden and pronounced sensitivity to heat or cold
  • A pimple-like lesion on the gums
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Tender, swollen gums

Dr. Polidori will use x-rays and other advanced tools to determine the cause of your symptoms. He will always take measures to save a tooth whenever possible. However, if a tooth is severely compromised, extraction may be necessary. The surest way to avoid the need for extraction is to schedule an appointment as soon as you experience a toothache or any other symptoms of oral health complications.

The Procedure

Root canal therapy is performed using local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. Once the treatment area is numb, Dr. Polidori will create an access point in the outer layers of the tooth to reach the inner pulp, which consists of blood vessels, connective tissues, and nerves.

Once a tooth becomes infected, root canal therapy is the only way to avoid the need for extraction.

Using precise dental tools, he will carefully remove the pulp from inside the tooth, including the root canals (the centers of the tooth roots). Once the tooth has been emptied, Dr. Polidori will disinfect the pulp chamber and fill it with a rubber-like substance. Next, he will seal the access point and begin reshaping the tooth to accommodate a dental crown.

Once the tooth is prepared, he will use CEREC® technology to take a digital impression. This information will guide computerized milling tools in creating a custom crown from a single block of porcelain. This procedure usually only takes about one hour, and you can relax in our office while you wait. Finally, Dr. Polidori will attach your crown. He will carefully check the restoration to make sure that it fits comfortably and does not disrupt the balance of your bite.

The Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Once a tooth becomes infected, root canal therapy is the only way to avoid the need for extraction. A missing tooth can cause surrounding teeth to shift out of alignment. Additionally, in the absence of tooth roots, the jaw will begin to atrophy, or shrink.

The only way to prevent both of these consequences is with a dental implant and an adjoining restoration. While this is the very best solution for replacing a lost tooth, preserving the tooth with root canal therapy is a far less extensive treatment that is considerably more affordable.
